Mekedatu is a place in kanakapura Taluk of Karnataka, where River Cauvery flows. Karnataka government has planning to build a reservoir across the River Cauvery for intention of using water for hydro power station and drinking water to Bengaluru City.

Tamil Nadu Government has opposed of building reservoir across the River cauvery in Mekedatu, since it would affect the flow of water to Tamil Nadu which ends in water shortage for agriculture and other uses.

Karnataka government said that, it will use only the excess of water after supplying of 192 tmcft to Tamil Nadu as per order given by Cauvery water tribunal.
