Union
Ministry of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation have given 6 months more to
Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal (CWDT) to submit its report.
About Cauvery Water Disputes
Tribunal:
- Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal (CWDT) was constituted on 2nd June 1990 to settle the water disputes between States of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala and Puducherry.
- The Tribunal submitted the report on February 2007 and announcing allocating specified quantum of water among the four states.
- The state and central Government has filed application for clarification and further guidance .
- So Tribunal has asked one more year for submitting report and again Central Government has given extended time to the Tribunal based on the request.
About the Disputes:
- River Cauvery originates in Brahmagiri hills in Kodagu, Karnataka. It flows through Tamil Nadu and out falling in Bay of Bengal in Poompuhar Trichy, Tamil Nadu.
- Delta Region of Tamil Nadu is mostly dependent on Cauvery River , Tamil Nadu is accusing Karnataka of not releasing water as per the share for Agriculture and drinking purpose.
- However Karnataka has expressed its inability to provide the due share to Tamil Nadu due to water scarcity in Karnataka.
