Prime
Minister Narendra Modi has commissioned Scorpene-class submarine INS Kalvari
into the Indian Navy in Mumbai. This is first of the six submarines to be
inducted in Indian Navy which was built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders
ltd,Mumbai.
About
INS Kalvari.
- INS Kalvari is a diesel-electric attack non-nuclear submarine designed by French Naval Defence and energy company DCNS and built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd Mumbai as a part of Project 75 of Indian Navy.
- Kalvari is Malayalam word,named after the dreaded tiger shark of Indian Ocean. It is one of the 6 Scorpene class submarine built under the project 75 of Indian Navy. Other 5 Scorpene is planned to commissioned by 2020.
- The length is 67.5 meter with height of 12.3 meters and displaces 1600 tonnes. It was fitted with Submarine Tactical Integrated Combat System suite (SUBTICS) which helps to get information from the sonars on board that the submarines are in detecting targets.
- It has capability to carry 18 Torpedoes and can dive upto depth of 300 meter and can travel around 1000 under water.
- It is capable of handling anti-surface warefare, anti-submarine warfare, mine-laying and area surveillance, intelligence gathering. Also it can attack and search periscope.
- It was made up of high tensil steel, which can withstand high pressure due to pressure created by water while diving deeper in ocean.
