Union Government has removed Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958 from Meghalaya after 28 years.
AFSPA which provides special powers to Indian Armed force to bring control AFSPA implemented area.
About AFSPA:
- Armed Force Special Power act was enacted in 1958 which give special powers to Indian armed force to bring control of “Disturbed area” declared by Indian government.
- It gives the forces to shoot to kill, search houses, destroy any property likely to be used by rebels. It also gives power to arrest without warrant.
- Parts of Assam, Manipur, Jammu and Kashmir, Nagaland are under AFSPA.
- Governor can send notification to union government regarding the imposition of AFSAP in particular area. Center then declared particular area as disturbed region for minimum three months.
