Union Minister of Health and
Family Welfare J P Nadda declared that India is now free of
Infective Trachoma . As per the latest survery report indicate that trachoma
has been eliminated among the children less than 10 years old in all the
surveyed districts with overall prevalence of 0.7% , which is lower than the
WHO’s criteria of prevalence less than 5%.
About
Trachoma :
- Trachoma is a chronic infectious disease caused by bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis in eye which leads to blindness. It affects the conjunctiva inside the eylids
- It is leading infectious cause of blindness across the world. The blindness caused by Trachoma is irreversible .
- It is transmitted through contact of eyes or nose discharge of affected person and also by flies which contacted with the eyes or nose of affected person.
- It is caused due to poor environmental and personal hygiene, not enough clear water and sanitation.
