India re-elected in International Maritime Council

India has been re-elected as member of International Maritime council for another 2 years from 2018-2019 under “B” category at the IMO’s 30th session of assembly held in London.

India and IMO
  • India is one of the earliest member of IMO  and has been joined in 1959, ever since India has been a member of IMO except during 1983-1384.
  • IMO Council plays a major role in deciding various important matters related to International shipping industry and its work strategy and allocating budget.
  • India’s 90 % of trade is carried through maritime transport and almost 92% trade carried through foreign vessels.
  • India is already signed 34 conventions and also in advanced stage of ratifying ballast water convention and Bunker convention.

About IMO:
International Maritime Organization established in 1948 in Geneva and came into force on 1959, with the slogan Safe, secure and efficient shipping on clean Ocean. It headquarters is in London.

It is a specialized agency of United Nation that is responsible for safety, security and environmental performance or prevent marine pollution of International Shipping.
